Reading Arduino Serial Port

Reading Incoming Serial Bytes

The following Arduino sketch (source code), will work with the USB port on an Arduino UNO development board.

Start a new Arduino IDE application project. Enter this sketch, save, and then upload to an attached Arduino UNO.

/* Arduino Serial Port source code
 * Read incoming bytes on serial port, and output 
 * the byte, back out through serial port.
 */
int incomingByte = 0; // Create variable to hold incoming serial bytes.

void setup() {
  Serial.begin(9600); // Begin a serial object with baud rate 9600bps.
}

void loop() {
        // Echo incoming characters:
        if (Serial.available() > 0) {

                // read incoming byte:
                incomingByte = Serial.read();

                // print byte:
                Serial.print("Received: ");
                Serial.println(incomingByte, DEC);	// Output byte in Decimanl notation.
        }
}

Open the 'Serial Monitor' in the Arduino IDE application.

Enter characters in the 'Serial Monitor' input field. Chracters enterd should be printed in the 'Serial Monitor' window.
